What We Do

What the work actually is

Three areas of work, all of them advisory. Frostwaypoint does not arrange permits, book escort or act as agent — where a passage needs those, they belong with the authority or the agent, and saying so early saves everyone time.

01
Core

Passage Planning

Pre-voyage  |  high-latitude and complex routes

Route review and voyage preparation for passages where the constraints are not obvious from the chart: navigational limits, seasonal windows, contingency anchorages and abort points, and what the plan actually requires of this hull at this draught. The output is a plan a master can work from, with the assumptions written down rather than implied.

02
Seasonal

Ice & High-Latitude Navigation

Ice-affected waters  |  seasonal assessment

Assessment of ice conditions, seasonal limitations and route options for navigation in ice-affected waters. This includes what the available ice products can and cannot tell you: broad-scale extent and concentration answer a different question from the one a bridge team faces when deciding whether to enter a lead.

On request

Maritime Advisory

Independent review  |  bridge-level perspective

A second qualified opinion on navigational and operational questions: voyage preparation, bridge procedures, route alternatives, and operational risk where a decision is being taken under commercial pressure. Independent means exactly that — no commission, no agency interest, no incentive in the answer.

01
Enquiry
You describe the vessel, the route and the window. If the passage is not feasible as described, you are told that first, before anything else is discussed.
02
Scoping
What is actually needed is agreed. Often that is narrower than the initial request, and occasionally the honest answer is that no advisory work is required at all.
03
The work
Route review, ice assessment or written opinion, depending on scope. Assumptions and their sources are stated rather than buried.
04
Follow-up
Questions after delivery are part of the work. A plan that cannot be interrogated is not much use on the bridge.
Do you arrange permits or icebreaker escort?
No. Permit applications and escort arrangements sit with the relevant authority and with the operator or their agent. Frostwaypoint advises on navigation and voyage preparation, and will tell you which body a given question belongs to — but it does not represent you before them.
What ice class does our vessel need for a given route?
That depends on the route, the season and the vessel. Rather than quoting a class off a table, the assessment starts from the specific hull, its draught and machinery, and the ice regime expected in the window you are working to. Where the honest answer is that the vessel is not suitable, that is the answer.
How current is the ice information you work from?
Ice charts and forecasts carry a resolution and an age, and both are stated in any assessment. Broad-scale satellite products are good at describing a region and poor at describing the lead in front of the ship — an assessment that hides that distinction is not doing its job.
Can you support a voyage that has already sailed?
Questions during a passage can be discussed, but Frostwaypoint is not a 24-hour operational desk and should not be planned into a voyage as one. If continuous monitoring is required, that needs a service built for it.
Why work with a single practitioner rather than a firm?
Because the judgement being bought is a specific one: that of a Master Mariner who has kept the watch. Nothing is delegated to a junior analyst, and there is no incentive to widen the scope. The limit of that model is capacity, which is why scoping happens before commitment.

Tell us the vessel, the route and the window you are working to. If the passage is not feasible as described, you will be told before any engagement begins. Send an enquiry or write to contact@frostwaypoint.com.
